COMPETITION TEAM

This year, the competition team will replace the Law Club.  Like an honor society, students will apply to be a part of the competition team.  Chosen students will meet at least once per week to hone their trial advocacy skills and prepare for the year's competitions.

COMPETITIONS

STATE OF FLORIDA MIDDLE SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION

Each year, middle schools across the state compete against each other, virtually, in a mock trial competition.  Nova Middle School has placed 4th and 5th in the state in recent years and is looking to improve its ranking this year.  Chosen students will spend time preparing for their roles as attorneys and witnesses and will gain a deeper understanding of the rules of evidence and trial procedure.

OPENING STATEMENT COMPETITION

The 4th annual Opening Statement Competition will take place on a date to be announced, pending Covid allowances.

Preliminary rounds will take place via video submission.  Pick a side (prosecution or defense).  Write a 3-5 minute opening statement for your chosen side and upload it to YouTube.  Then, email Mrs. Murphy the link to your video by __________ at 11:59pm. YouTube videos automatically upload as public videos. Change your upload to "unlisted," which means that only people with the link can view your video.  To learn how to make your video "unlisted," view the following tutorial: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/157177?hl=en.

On Monday, ______________, the top 8 entries in each grade will be announced.  Those students will advance to the live competition on ___________________ and they will be required to have an opening statement prepared for BOTH sides of the case.

The case is below.  Read it.  Write your opening. Submit your entry.  GOOD LUCK!
