8TH GRADE LAW
8th Grade Law is a high school-level course and the culmination of the Nova Middle Law Program. Successful completion of Advanced 7th Grade Law is a prerequisite, as students are expected to enter the course with a strong foundation in legal principles, courtroom procedures, and trial advocacy.
This advanced course takes students well beyond the basics by exploring increasingly sophisticated legal topics. Students study advanced criminal law, tort law, contract law, copyright law, privacy rights, public policy, negligence, alternative dispute resolution, and appellate law while analyzing real court cases and current legal issues. Students learn not only what the law is, but also how courts interpret it and how legal decisions shape society.
Courtroom advocacy continues to be a major focus of the course. Students participate in advanced mock trials, refining the courtroom skills they have developed in previous classes. They learn more sophisticated techniques for delivering persuasive opening statements, conducting direct and cross-examinations, presenting closing arguments, preparing witnesses, and developing effective trial strategy.
Students also continue their study of the Federal Rules of Evidence, gaining a deeper understanding of objections, admissibility of evidence, impeachment, witness credibility, hearsay, relevance, expert testimony, and courtroom procedure. By the end of the course, students are expected to think strategically about how evidence is presented and challenged during trial.
A unique feature of 8th Grade Law is its introduction to moot court, where students shift from arguing facts before a jury to arguing questions of law before an appellate court. Students learn how to interpret statutes, analyze constitutional issues, apply legal precedent, and present oral arguments before a panel of judges, developing the analytical reasoning and persuasive advocacy skills used by appellate attorneys.
As the final course in the Nova Middle Law sequence, 8th Grade Law serves as the bridge to Nova High School's prestigious Cambridge Law Program. Students leave the course prepared for the increased rigor of high school legal studies while developing valuable skills in critical thinking, public speaking, legal writing, collaboration, and problem solving.
